What we collect
- Your email address, so you can sign in and we can verify it is yours.
- The name you choose, which is public and appears on everything you post.
- A random identifier stored on your device, used only to keep "Me too" to one per device per Tingle.
- A country, worked out from your internet address, so we can show where something is being noticed.
- Anything you post: Tingles you start, comments, replies and pictures.
What we don't collect
- No precise location. If you use "Near me" we ask your browser for a rough area and keep only the country.
- No public record of which Tingles you said "Me too" to.
- No advertising trackers and no selling of your information.
Google Analytics and cookies
We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they use. It sets cookies in your browser that count visits and repeat visits. It only loads after you agree to it, so if you decline nothing is set and nothing is sent. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookies link in the footer, which stops the script loading on your next visit. We never send your name, email or anything you have written to Google.
Meaning fingerprints
When you start a Tingle or type your own wording for one, we turn that sentence into a long list of numbers that represents its meaning. This is what lets us tell that "my coffee costs more" and "el café ha subido" are the same thing, in any language. The numbers are stored next to your wording and are only used for matching. They are not tied to your name in public, and nobody can read them as text.
Pictures and videos in comments
You can attach a picture or a short video to a comment. Pictures are shrunk on your own device before they are sent. Files are kept in private storage, not on a public address, and are shown through short-lived links that only work for files attached to a comment that is still visible. Deleting your comment removes the attachment from the discussion. Please don't upload anything that identifies someone who hasn't agreed to it.
Device identifier and country
A random identifier is stored in your browser the first time you use the site. It is not linked to your name and is used only to keep "Me too" to one per device per Tingle, and to stop one person pressing it over and over. Separately, our hosting provider tells us the country your internet address is in. We keep the country and nothing finer — no city, no coordinates, and never your internet address itself.
Stored on your device
We keep a few small values in your browser's local storage: your sign-in session, your chosen language, and the random device identifier described above. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from Edit profile. Your profile, picture, follows, blocks and notifications are removed. Comments you wrote are shown as "[deleted]", and Tingles you started stay up without your name on them. The counts of how many people noticed something are not personal and are not removed.
